WATER QUALITY ADVISORY (HIGH CHLORINE LEVELS)
ENTIRE SERVICE AREA

Please be advised that the Black Mountain Irrigation District has issued a 24 hour WATER QUALITY ADVISORY (WQA) effective starting at 7:00 pm tonight for all customers within BMID service area.

On Wednesday at 9:30 am, June 2, 2010, BMID experienced a disruption in electrical service at our main chlorinator along Mission Creek. An overdosing of chlorine into the water transmission mains resulted. Water with high chlorine concentration is projected to reach the water service area by 8:00 pm tonight. BMID crews are working to drain and dissipate the highly chlorinated water to safe disposal locations, prior to it reaching our customers. Although we will be able to contain most of the chlorine, this precautionary advisory has been issued.

Water with high levels of chlorine is noticeable by persons with a normal sense of smell. It is recommended that extra attention and precautions be taken for those with compromised sense of smell and for small children who may not recognize the smell. If a high chlorine smell is noticed, please utilize an alternate source of drinking water and BMID recommends running the water to flush this water from the distribution system. Chlorine may irritate skin and if inhaled may cause respiratory problems.

BMID apologizes for any inconvenience this advisory might cause, and appreciates your cooperation and patience during this time. If you have any questions, contact Black Mountain Irrigation District at (250) 765-5169.

Scotty Creek Agricultural Area Boil Water Notice - Downgraded to a Water Quality Advisory June 12/09
BMID has rescinded the temporary Boil Water Notice for the Scotty Creek agricultural area.  The alert has been downgraded to a Water Quality Advisory. Spring runoff in Scotty Creek has subsided and turbidity levels are now reduced to levels where the Boil Water Notice can be lifted. The turbidity levels are still above 1.0 NTU and there are elevated levels of pathogens in the Scotty Creek source water.  Chlorination remains in place on this water supply. Under the Water Quality Advisory, it is recommended that persons wishing to take extra precautions should boil the water for one minute and then refrigerate it in a clean, covered container. For further protection, water intended for drinking, washing fruits and vegetables, making beverages or brushing teeth, should be boiled as noted above, or use a safe alternative. The approximately 40 homes affected by this seasonal Water Quality Advisory have been notified directly on an individual door-to-door basis.  Accordingly, these same properties will be notified when the Water Quality Advisory is removed.  PLEASE NOTE THIS DOES NOT AFFECT CUSTOMERS IN THE SCOTTY CREEK SUBDIVISION OR CUSTOMERS IN THE MAJORITY OF AREAS WITHIN BMID.

Boil Water Notice - Scotty Creek Agricultural Service Area (Old Vernon Rd N/ Scotty Creek Rd/Lakha Rd) REMOVED JUNE 12/09 - DOWNGRADED TO WATER QUALITY ADVISORY.

BMID has delivered door tags & notices to approximately 40 domestic water users in the north agricultural area of Black Mtn Irrig District. This boil water notice was necessary because, even though the water quality is currently below 1.0 NTU and microbiological levels are all low, there is the potential for elevated turbidity levels due to increased seasonal demands. At this time of year the water supply must be augmented from Scotty Creek.  Scotty Creek water has elevated turbidity levels and a high level of colour (brownish tinge). The regular water supply will be supplemented by water from Scotty Creek intermittently over the next few months, as demand requires.

The areas affected are:  2551 to 4310 Old Vernon Rd N.  4530 to 4660 Scotty Creek Road.   2420 to 3091 Lakha Road.  This does NOT affect residents of the Scotty Creek subdivision or the majority of areas within BMID.

There is good news for those properties affected by this seasonal advisory!  BMID is undertaking works required to eliminate Scotty Creek for domestic water purposes.  This project will be tendered within the next 2 months and we are hopeful it will be completed by the late fall of 2009.
